Too often, we point to test scores and rankings to assess the quality of educational progress. We ignore the most essential skills are often the most difficult to assess. Skills such as critical thinking, resilience, creativity, collaboration and work ethic can’t be scored by filling in boxes on a standard exam. These are also the skills employers say they want in prospective candidates. If we really want to be preparing students for their next steps, we need to emphasize critical skills across all curriculum.
